Dust off your leisure suits, stuff your pockets full of Aces and get your drinking hats on, folks. It's time once again for the annual Big Empire Cocktail Soiree, now in its seventh year of high-pitched revelry! This year's events will be held on June 11th-13th, when the Vegas sun beats hotel room prices to their lowest levels. All the scheduled partying takes place on Saturday, the 12th, but we'll be around all weekend for spontaneous good times. See you there!
The 4th Annual Solar System Series of Poker
The Solar System's most important tournament, the Solar System Series of Poker, is moving to the Plaza for 2004. If you have a seat, are on the waiting list and an optimist, or just want to watch, be at the Plaza's poker room 15 minutes before noon on Saturday, April 12. Send us an e-mail to get your name on the waiting list, but don't get your hopes up that you'll be in the tournament unless you're already confirmed. Of course, spectators and hecklers are always welcome. No matter what, anybody who wants to play or watch needs to show up at the Plaza poker room by noon on Saturday.
The 7th Annual Cocktail Soiree
The evening gets rolling 'round about cocktail hour (8 p.m. for sticklers), where we'll fuel up on cheap booze and mingle under the smoky haze hovering above the Gold Spike lounge. Meet the folks who bring you Las Vegas on 25 cents a day, and some drunk guy who wants your spare change!
Sartorial Splendor
Last year, Daniel "Fang" Ari, Sartorial champion for too many years to count, announced his retirement from the competition. That means the field's wide open, so start shopping now. Prizes are awarded for most splendid, outrageous, tacky outfit in the men's and women's division.
The 6th Annual Gold Spike Penny Invitational
Just for showing up, everybody gets 50 cents. Have we gone mad? No! We're once again giving away fifty pennies to all Soiree attendes, to be used in the most raucous slot tournament this side of Singapore. Cheating, stealing and yelling are all not only acceptable, but actually encouraged. When the dust settles, whoever has the most pennies wins a Gold Spike t-shirt.
The Big Empire Shrimp Cocktail-Eating Contest
Even though the reputation of this high-stakes competition was besmirched last year when all the participants agreed to stop at 8 cocktails a piece and declare a tie, we're determined to soldier on. Help us restore the greatness of a once proud tradition. Come and stuff your face full of bargain basement shrimp cocktails.
The night devolves into debauchery
The official events end when the last shrimp is choked down, but the party is far from over. Join us for craps at the El Cortez, pie at the Gold Spike, or whatever other hijinks we can think of. We won't rest until we've either won every dollar from every Las Vegas casino or the sun comes up on a Sunday morning -- whichever's first.
